Saving America’s Mustangs

Wild Horses In The Wild

Saving Americas Mustangs is a 501(c)(3) and Section 4942(j)(3) private operating organization established to protect and preserve wild Mustangs in America. Over one hundred years ago, more than 2 million mustangs roamed free. Today, there are approximately 30,000 left running wild Mustangs in America. Why the disastrous decline? American horses are being removed from public lands by our federal government at taxpayers’ expense.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior tasked with administering America’s public lands. One of the BLM’s duties is to manage the population of wild animals. When accounting for these wild animals, the BLM administers a “gathering process,” which consists of low-flying helicopters chasing the horses for miles at a time to a designated area for counting. Once there, the horses are loaded into trucks and delivered to short-term holding facilities where they potentially stay for up to three years if not adopted or sold (often times to killer buyers.) These short-term holding facilities cost you, the taxpayer, $2,500.00 per horse, per year. With over 11,000 horses in short-term holding, taxpayers are spending over $27 million dollars a year. This number does not account for long-term holding facilities where over 35,000 horses are held at $450 per horse, per year totaling over $15 million in taxpayer money each year. After so much financial support, taxpayers still have no control over the selling process that eventually leads these animals to slaughter.

Why spend taxpayer dollars to fund this unnecessary evil? In 1971, the United States Congress recognized Mustangs as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West, which continue to contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people.” Saving Americas Mustangs is working to bring this vision back to reality by keeping wild horses in the wild where they belong, for generations to come. If you want to save the Mustangs, learn more about them and consider donating to Saving America’s Mustangs.
